Goes Casual for a Cause
Lee National Denim Day® to Raise Millions on
One Day for the Fight Against Breast Cancer
Seattle, WA –Friday, October 10,
2003 the Employees of Regal Financial Bank
and more than a million others nationwide will don
their favorite denim and a pink ribbon to show support
in the fight against breast cancer. In its eighth
year, Lee National Denim Day® is the world’s
largest single-day fundraiser for breast cancer
research, education, screening and treatment programs.
Every year on one Friday in October, National Breast
Cancer Awareness Month, Lee® Jeans invites businesses
and organizations like Regal Financial Bank to participate
in Lee National Denim Day by allowing their employees
to wear denim to work in exchange for a $5 donation
to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
“All individuals from Regal Financial Bank
will wear jeans on Lee National Denim Day to demonstrate
our commitment to fighting breast cancer,” said
Jennifer Wahlsten, representative of Regal Financial
Bank. “In addition to raising much-needed funds,
putting on jeans that day reminds everyone to think
about their health and the health of those they love.”
In seven years, Lee National Denim Day has raised
more than $36 million for the Komen Foundation, an
international, not-for-profit organization dedicated
to putting an end to breast cancer. The goal this
year is to raise $6.5 million in one day. Every dollar
raised goes directly to the Komen Foundation to support
breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment
programs.
“The support we get from companies, organizations
and schools every year is overwhelming,” said
Kathy Collins, vice president of marketing communications
for Lee. “The $5 you might normally have spent
on lunch has a much greater impact when combined with
the donations from people nationwide. It is millions
of individuals that make this program a success.”
Seventy percent of donations from Lee National Denim
Day help fund the Komen Foundation Award and Research
Grant Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer
research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific
conferences around the world. Fifteen percent of proceeds
go toward local education, screening and treatment
programs nationwide to fill gaps in communities other
programs may overlook. The remaining funds raised
on Lee National Denim Day help support educational
efforts through the Komen Foundation’s award-winning
Web site, www.komen.org, which provides the latest
on breast health and breast cancer information.
“Every year we get thousands of letters from
individuals who are thrilled to have the opportunity
to make a small donation they know will have a lasting
impact on breast cancer programs," said Susan
Braun, president and chief executive officer of the
Komen Foundation. “We applaud Lee Jeans’
efforts, and all organizations that support Lee National
Denim Day. These funds are making a difference and
getting us closer to a cure every day.”
